The Exceptional Merit in Media Awards (EMMAs) are given to those who exhibit excellence in journalism and media coverage of issues uniquely important to women.
The EMMAs were created in 1985 and have seen decades of unique and excellent media. Past winners include Sheryl WuDunn and Nicholas Kristof for their book Half the Sky, Helen Benedict for her article “The Scandal of Military Rape,” published in Ms. Magazine, Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s documentary Miss Representation, Roxane Gay’s book Bad Feminist, and many more.

Awards criteria: Entries should have been written or produced between January 2016 and February 2018.
Media categories include: articles in newspapers, magazines, and online; books; radio and television programming; films (documentaries, shorts, and feature length); internet programming; blogs. Organizations and individuals may submit nominations.
Each entry may apply under one or more of the criteria and categories below. All entries content will be judged for superior quality to qualify for an award. Entry content should either:
- Be relevant to issues uniquely or especially important to women.
- Recognize women involved in the political process and the positive contributions they have made to advance women’s issues and concerns.
- Create or expand the platform to promote dialogue on issues especially important to women, such as pay equity, sexual violence or assault, reproductive rights, and healthcare.
- Recognize intersectional feminism that highlights the unique discrimination faced and work done by women of color, queer women, disabled women, working class women, and other marginalized women.
Submit entries to the NWPC EMMAs’ committee no later than 5 PM ET on September 1st to be considered by a panel of expert judges. Judges will make their decisions by August 1st. Organizations and individuals may submit nominations.
