2012 Exceptional Merit in Media Awards (EMMAs)

Printer-friendly view of this page.

The Exceptional Merit Media Awards (EMMAs) were created by the National Women’s Political Caucus (NWPC) to honor and reward journalists and media outlets in radio, television, print and the internet that inform and educate the public about critical issues that impact women’s lives. The EMMAs are presented at an awards ceremony and reception, also known as “the EMMAs,” hosted by NWPC.

In 1986, NWPC held the first EMMAs ceremony and gave its first awards. Over the past 24 years, the EMMAs have been presented for outstanding coverage of women’s issues in media. Recent recipients include Sheryl WuDunn for Half the Sky, Glamour Magazine’s “Meet Generation (R)x” and Ms. Magazine’s “The Scandal of Military Rape.” The winners encompass all types of issues of importance to women and often bring to light those issues that might tend to get glossed over or slip through the cracks of mainstream coverage. Other past winners include many renowned and highly respected journalists such as Ellen Goodman, Cokie Roberts, Barbara Ehrenreich, Diane Sawyer, and Eleanor Clift.

NWPC appoints a panel of celebrity, academic and journalist judges who review and judge the entries and select the winners from each category. The winners encompass all types of issues of importance to women and often bring to light those issues that might tend to get glossed over or to slip through the cracks of mainstream public attention. U.S. Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) has cited the EMMAs as a useful mechanism for bringing issues to her attention resulting in legislation being drafted and introduced to address them.

The 2012 EMMAs will be held on the evening of Thursday, October 4th at the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College in New York, NY.
