EMMAs 2009

The Exceptional Merit in Media Awards were held at the National Press Club in Washington, DC on July 14, 2009. Tyne Daly of "Cagney and Lacey" fame handed out the awards which included: Tommy Warren for his feature film, "The Inner Circle;" Kamala Lopez for her film on Congresswoman Jeannette Rankin, "A Single Woman;" Stacy Schiff for her article on Cleopatra in the New York Times; Dee Dee Myers for her book "Why Women Should Rule the World;" Linda Lowen for her article, "Sarah Palin, 'Girl' Candidate;" Katha Pollitt for her editorial, "Iron my Skirt" and Glamour Magazine for three outstanding articles on the 2008 election.

Signing of Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

Claire Giesen, Executive Director of NWPC, attended the signing of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act on behalf of NWPC. The signing was a historic occasion since it was the first Bill signed into law by President Barack Obama. Also, in attendance at the event in the White House were First Lady Michelle Obama, Lily Ledbetter, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Dr. Dorothy I. Height, Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, Congressional Black Caucus Chairperson Barbara Lee, Ellie Smeal of the Feminist Majority, Kim Gandy of NOW, and many other women, labor and civil rights leaders.

Remembering Betty

On May 17, 2006, NWPC along with Sewall-Belmont House & Museum, NOW, Feminist Majority Foundation, and National Coalition of Women's Organizations hosted a memorial service for Betty Friedan. Betty died on her 85th birthday, February 4, 2006. The reception took place at the Sewall-Belmont House and speakers relayed stories and memories of Betty, Betty's impact on thier individual lives and society, and urged us to continue Betty's legacy by fighting for women's equality.
