Count Every Vote Rally, Saturday, May 31st

I arrived at 7:30 a.m. and the crowd lining the street at the entrance of the Marriott Hotel where the meeting was going to take place, was already in the hundreds – people of all ages, races, ethnicities, sexes and sexual preferences.  It continued to build steadily as buses and carloads of people kept streaming in.

The energy was palpable from the thousands of Hillary supporters and to those voters from Florida and Michigan who demanded that their voices be heard and their votes counted.  Supporters from states around the country were there in solidarity.  Hand made signs ranging from “Single Women Count” to “DNC: Does Not Care” to a six year old’s sign which read: “I Can Count; Why Can’t You” were carried by supporters.  Honking cars passed demonstrating their support.

At 9:30 a.m. we marched down the hill for two blocks chanting to the park where our rally was being held. I was one of several speakers who spoke to the crowd.  The crowd was pumped and energized.  I was fortified by the electric response and impassioned chanting from the crowd as I made my remarks.  Folks rocked to the music between speakers and shouted their support for Hillary.

After 2 hours we marched back up the hill and continued the vocal vigil on the street as the DNC committee worked inside.  Updates were brought down to us by folks who had been inside.  Although the crowd was doused by a deluge of rain, their spirits were not dampened.  The vigil of remaining participants continued until about 7:30 p.m. until the decisions were made.

We made our way into the lobby of the hotel where we watched live feeds of the final debates on the votes.  When they were done, the doors of the room burst open on the floor above with Hillary supporters shouting “DENVER, DENVER!”  Those of us downstairs and looking up to the balcony joined in the chants!   You could feel the outrage and frustration.

While happy they decided to count the votes of Florida and Michigan and seated the delegates, HRC supporters were of course upset that they only counted one half, and especially upset about the Michigan allocation.  My opinion:  how do you consider it fair to allocate the delegates who were UNCOMMITTED all to BO?  AND to top it off they actually gave 4 of the delegates that Hillary won to him?  This is why Harold Ickes was so angry and said HRC reserves the right to take it to the credentials committee in Denver!

Afterwards, still unable to leave, several of us remained and exchanged cards, emails and phone numbers vowing to contact each other and remain active.

We will take it to Denver.  We are in this till the end!

Statement on NARAL's Obama Endorsement

The National Women’s Political Caucus is disappointed to learn of NARAL Pro-Choice America’s endorsement of Senator Obama. The Caucus knows Hillary Clinton to be a clear leader and a consistent champion of the issues that NARAL and NWPC have in common. We believe that this announcement will divide the choice community at a time when we need to stand united.

As a lawyer, advocate, First Lady, and Senator, Hillary Clinton has stepped up and stood out on matters important to women. When it comes to each woman's ability to make the most personal of life decisions, Hillary has been a consistent and reliable advocate for a woman's right to choose.  In fact, she has received numerous awards from both NARAL and Planned Parenthood.

      • Senator Clinton condemned the Supreme Court's April 2007 decision to allow the government to dictate to women what they can and cannot do about their own health.
      • She has championed the Prevention First Act, which expands access to family planning services for low income women.
      • She is an original co-sponsor of the Freedom of Choice Act, federal legislation that would guarantee the right to choose for future generations of women.
      • In partnership with Senator Murray, Senator Clinton waged a successful battle to get the Food and Drug Administration to make Plan B (the "morning after" pill) available over the counter.  This was one of the biggest accomplishments of the pro-choice advocacy community in years.
      • Senator Clinton made it very clear when she stood on the Senate floor to voice her opposition to Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito that one of her major concerns was to keep intact Roe v. Wade.  While Senator Obama was also opposed to the nomination of Roberts and Alito, he never mentioned the preservation of Roe v. Wade.

NWPC members in 30 chapters throughout the country join me to say that we are disappointed to learn of NARAL’s endorsement of Senator Obama, and that we stand firm in our support and commitment to the candidacy of Senator Hillary Clinton for President.
