Hands off My Social Security Day!
Take action by Tuesday, April 26, 2005
Approximately 58% of Social Security beneficiaries are women. Without Social Security benefits over half of women 65 and older would fall below the poverty line. According to the Institute for Women's Policy Research, "private accounts will be detrimental to women because, on average, women are still in lower paying positions than men, live longer than men and work fewer years". On Tuesday, April 26th the Senate Finance Committee will be holding a hearing to allow for mark-ups on a bill that could lead to the privatization of Social Security in the United States. The bill, which will be introduced by Finance Committee Chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), would allow people to invest a portion of their payroll taxes into private accounts. The bill will have serious consequences for women and the poor, who tend to make less than their counterparts. Additionally those receiving benefits as a result of a disability, death of a family member or unemployment could face cuts in their insurance benefits.
Come out and show your opposition to the Privatization of Social Security by attending¡ Hands off My Social Security Day! Rallies and other activities planned in over 30 states and Washington, DC! Signs will be provided. The rallies across the country will be significant and will be an important measure of success on this very big day.
