NWPC took
on Chris Matthews… And we
won!
Just moments after the National Women’s Political Caucus held a spirited rally Jan. 17 outside the NBC News headquarters in Washington, D.C., Chris Matthews, host of Hardball, expressed regret for making sexist statements about Hillary Clinton. And he did so publicly on his show!
“This is a victory for all women” said Lulu Flores, President of National Women’s Political Caucus. “We are pleased that Chris Matthews has shown remorse for the repeatedly sexist comments directed at Hillary Clinton. We are going to take Matthews's words to heart, but continue to monitor him and all media in their treatment of women during this crucial election season.”
Matthews has a history of employing “hostility through humor” as a way to make his points on his nationally televised show and has built a reputation as the king of negative stereotypes to diminish women’s credibility.
He has had a field day with Hillary Clinton referring to her as a “she devil”, “witchy”, and “Nurse Ratched” in One Flew Over the Cukoo’s Nest. But is was his latest remarks made on Morning Joe the day after the New Hampshire primaries that NWPC finally decided he must be stopped:
“Let’s not forget—and let me be brutal—the reason she’s a U.S. Senator, the reason she is a candidate for president, the reason she may be a front runner is her husband messed around.”
The media plays a crucial role in shaping and defining public perceptions about policy and the role of women in making policy. When the nation is poised to make critical choices about its future direction, all candidates, women and men, need to be judged on the merits of their issues and their policy platforms.
