IN O'CONNOR'S FOOTSTEPS
Friday, September 30, 2005
Washington, DC…“The National Women’s Political Caucus believes that Sandra Day O’Connor, our nation's first woman Supreme Court justice, set the standard for her replacement,” said NWPC President Llenda Jackson-Leslie. “Her fairness, reason and intellect are qualities that make her an effective Justice and we hope that the President will nominate someone who can follow in her footsteps.”
O'Connor was a pragmatic conservative who considered the impact on our nation's courts and people's daily lives when making decisions. She was a pivotal vote concerning the right to privacy of all Americans including women's right to reproductive choice, and was a decisive voice on cases involving affirmative action, workplace discrimination, and Title IX—cases that impacted equal opportunity for women.
In addition to upholding O’Connor’s qualities, NWPC wants the next nominee to be truthful and forthcoming about his or her views and past writings. We want the White House to cooperate in full disclosure.
We want to see a nominee whose record and philosophy demonstrate respect for existing precedents that establish women as full citizens with constitutionally protected rights and privileges enjoyed by all Americans, and we want a thorough, fair and deliberative process.
Ideally we would like the next nominee to be a qualified woman with a record and philosophy similar to O'Connor’s. We do NOT WANT a woman nominee who is a radical or judicial activist with a history of reversing precedents that guarantee full citizenship rights for women.
