NATIONAL WOMEN'S POLITICAL CAUCUS STATEMENT ON THE NOMINATION OF JUDGE SAMUEL A. ALITO, JR.
Friday, January 6, 2006
The National Women’s Political Caucus Board has voted unanimously to oppose the nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. to the Supreme Court of the United States.
We believe that there is clear and unambiguous evidence that Judge Alito would not maintain the delicate balance that Justice Sandra Day O’Connor has brought to the court. Judge Alito has plainly stated in writing that he believes the Constitution does not protect abortion rights; we are deeply concerned that this position will lead to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. This is unacceptable.
A
review of his judicial record raises serious
concerns about Judge Alito’s views on
affirmative action, gender discrimination and
worker’s rights. We believe Judge Alito’s
decisions reflect hostility to women and
minorities and, as an organization whose
mission includes fighting discrimination, we
simply cannot stand by quietly and allow this
nomination to go forward. To do so would be to
turn our backs on the progress on equal rights
this nation has made over the last 50
years.
The
Caucus strongly believes that after an
independent review of Judge Alito’s record,
and thorough and vigorous questioning of the
nominee, reasonable Senators will reach the
appropriate conclusion and oppose the
nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito to the
Supreme Court.
