The National Women’s Political Caucus wants to extend our gratitude to our endorsed candidates who had the prudence to vote NO on the “Unborn Victims of Violence Act.” The House passed the act on Thursday, February 26, by a vote of 254 to 163.
The act, which now heads to the Senate floor, pretends to protect pregnant women and their fetuses from domestic and other acts of violence, when in reality, it takes us one step closer to making abortion illegal.
“Our candidates recognized the dangerous precedent that this legislation sets by granting legal status to fetuses,” said Roselyn O’Connell, NWPC president, “and their votes are further testaments to their commitment to women’s reproductive rights.”
NWPC, instead, supports legislation like that offered by Reps. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) and John Conyers Jr. (D-MI). Their legislation frames the issue of violence against pregnant women by focusing on the woman injured as a result of the violent act and includes provisions that deal with an “interrupt[ion] in the normal course of pregnancy” or the “ending of a pregnancy,” but does not grant legal status to fetuses.
Candidates who voted NO:
Rep. Lois Capps CA-22 (D) Rep. Susan Davis CA-53 (D) Rep. Anna Eshoo CA-14 (D) Rep. Jane Harman CA-36 (D) Rep. Barbara Lee CA-9 (D) Rep. Zoe Lofgren CA-16 (D) Rep. Grace Flores Napolitano CA-38 (D) Rep. Nancy Pelosi CA-8 (D) Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard CA-34 (D) Rep. Linda Sanchez CA-39 (D) Rep. Loretta Sanchez CA-47 (D) Rep. Hilda L. Solis CA-32 (D) Rep. Ellen Tauscher CA-10 (D) Rep. Lynn Woolsey CA-6 (D) Rep. Maxine Waters CA-35 (D) Rep. Diane Watson CA-33 (D)
