National Women’s Political Caucus Opposes “Unborn Victims of Violence Act”

Tuesday, February 24, 2004

The National Women’s Political Caucus strongly urges Congress to reject the so-called “Unborn Victims of Violence Act.” The act, scheduled for debate and vote on the House floor Wednesday, February 25, pretends to protect pregnant women and their fetuses from domestic and other acts of violence, when in reality, it takes us one step closer to making abortion illegal.

“The legislation, couched as protection against violence for pregnant women, actually represents a further encroachment on women's reproductive rights and their protection under Roe v. Wade,” said Roselyn O’Connell, NWPC president. “The cynical use of emotional language in the title is a screen to hide the real purposes of the legislation, which are to further weaken Roe.”

NWPC, instead, supports legislation like that offered by Reps. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) and John Conyers Jr. (D-MI). Their legislation frames the issue of violence against pregnant women by focusing on the woman injured as a result of the violent act and includes provisions that deal with an “interrupt[ion] in the normal course of pregnancy” or the “ending of a pregnancy,” but does not grant legal status to fetuses.
