National Women’s Political Caucus Calls on FDA to Stop Stalling on Morning After Pill
Thursday, February 19, 2004
The National Women's Political Caucus called upon FDA Commissioner, Mark McClellan, to accept the recommendation of the FDA advisory committee to approve over-the-counter status for the morning after pill without further delay. McClellan ordered the delay last Friday, on the excuse that further research is needed to study the use of Plan B (as the drug is sometimes called) by teenagers.
Roselyn O'Connell, President of the National Women's Political Caucus (NWPC) called the delay a thinly disguised political ploy. O'Connell said, “ FDA standards should be based on scientific evidence and not political agendas." O’Connell noted that the FDA's usual practice is to follow the advice of its experts. In this case, despite a 24-3 recommendation to approve the status, the FDA delayed implementation for three months. O'Connell added, " Politicizing what should be a medical decision is an affront to women, who have the right to control their reproductive lives, and should be reversed."
