Clare C. Giesen became Executive Director of the National Women’s Political Caucus in January 2006. As a former resident of Houston, Texas, she was a proud and active member of the Harris County Women’s Political Caucus.
Giesen has more than 15 years experience in organizing and fundraising on behalf of electing qualified pro-choice women to local, statewide, and national office. In her home state of Texas, she played a critical role in the management of two pivotal races that elected women to public office; the victory of Ann Richards as the first modern female Governor of Texas and the election of Kathryn Whitmire as the first woman Mayor of Houston. She also has held leadership positions in a number of other successful campaigns including the Clinton Gore campaign in Harris County, Texas and the Mike Andrews campaign for Congress in the 25th Congressional District of Texas.
Giesen has a strong background in grassroots and coalition building, public affairs, and strategic communications. As a Presidential Appointee for the Clinton Administration, Clare served as Senior Advisor on Environmental and Energy Issues for the Department of Energy and the Department of Agriculture. She also served as White House and Intergovernmental Liaison for the Secretary of the Department of Energy. As Chief of Staff for Congressman Mike Andrews, she was the Congressman’s representative in Texas and worked to resolve local and national issues with public officials, stakeholders, and community activists.
As an Instructor of Sociology for Houston Community College, Clare managed to insert her interest in gender issues through teaching courses on Marriage and the Family, Social Problems, and Introduction to Sociology.
Giesen holds a Masters Degree in Sociology from the University of Houston and Bachelors Degree in Sociology from Louisiana State University.
