The National Women’s Political Caucus congratulates Laphonza Butler on her historic appointment to the Senate. She will become the only Black woman currently serving in the U.S. Senate and the first openly LGBTQ+ person to represent California in the chamber.

The decision to appoint Ms. Butler shows a continued effort to gain representation in the Senate. As a champion for reproductive healthcare and equality, we know that Ms. Butler will serve the people of California honorably.
