Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the National Women’s Political Caucus on Saturday, July 10, 2021!

Founded in 1971, the National Women’s Political Caucus is a multi-partisan grassroots organization dedicated to increasing women’s participation in the political process. NWPC recruits, trains and supports pro-choice women candidates for elected and appointed offices at all levels of government. In addition to financial donations, the Caucus offers campaign training for candidates and campaign managers, as well as technical assistance and advice. State and local chapters provide support to candidates running at state and local levels by helping raise money and providing crucial hands-on volunteer assistance.

Our History is Our Strength

In 1971, there were two women serving in the U.S. Senate and 13 women in the U.S. House of Representatives.

On July 10, 1971, a group of over 320 women united in what became a catalyzing moment to permanently change the political landscape in the U.S. through the founding of the National Women’s Political Caucus. Today, we honor the hundreds of thousands of women who have given so much of themselves and worked tirelessly to pave the way for others who continue to keep moving us forward. As Alice Paul said, “When you put your hand to the plow, you can’t put it down until you get to the end of the row”.

Fifty year later, there are now a total of 143 (104D, 39R) women who hold seats in the United States Congress, comprising 26.7% of the 535 members; 24 women (24%) serve in the U.S. Senate, and 119 women (27.4%) serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. Four women non-voting delegates (2D, 2R) also represent American Samoa, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands in the United States House of Representatives. (CAWP Data Sheet, 2021)

Although we’ve made significant progress, to reach political parity, we need to continue in our work to recruit, train and elect women to political office at all levels of government.

We look to the future, always remembering those upon whose shoulders we stand. From them, we gather our strength to continue the mission.

Please show your strength and determination to elect more progressive women to the United States’ Congress, by joining NWPC as we continue to lead change in the 21st century and beyond!
